Security assessment for more than 10 years
Huang Dayuan said that the approved GM rice products had already been evaluated for safety as early as 1999, and more than ten tons of genetically modified rice were put into animal experiments. In addition to R&D units, the company also commissioned professional third-party agencies such as the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention to carry out trials, and after repeated evaluation, it was finally determined that GM rice is as safe as non-GM rice.
As for the whole process, Huang Dazhao and R&D units provided research data on the molecular characteristics of the genes, etc. Afterwards, more than 60 experts from the National Agricultural Biosafety Committee, including biotechnology, environmental safety, food safety, laws and regulations, conducted the research. The results of the review were sent to an inter-ministerial meeting consisting of 11 ministries such as agriculture, health, and environmental protection. No clinical trial
Reporter: Did you consider conducting human clinical trials before putting it into commercial production?
Huang Dazhao: In the past ten years, GM rice has been undergoing a variety of safety evaluations, and has fully verified the conclusions, proving its safety to humans and the environment, and also conducted a large number of animal experiments.
Not all food safety is subject to clinical trials and only drugs are needed.
The safety of GM wheat in the United States was approved as early as 67 years ago. They also extracted genes from breast milk and developed genetically modified transgenic rice, which has grown for many years and has gradually expanded in size. So we are not the first one to do it.
Reporter: Some food safety incidents that have occurred in genetically modified foods have been reported at home and abroad, which has deepened people's concerns about genetically modified foods.
Huang Dazhao: We have paid great attention to these events. As of the end of last year, a total of 16 cases were collected. However, after verification, there is no definite evidence that the GM technology itself has a problem. Some time ago, some fields in Guangxi had been planted with genetically modified corn, which caused sperm inactivation after human consumption. Later, it was clear that this was purely nonsense.
