According to the report of Popular Science in the United States, the team of Lutz Douai from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, France, for the first time imported stem-cell-born blood into the human body and achieved success.
The Dua team first extracted hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow of a volunteer and then used a cocktail of cocktail growth factors to stimulate the stem cells to bind to red blood cells. After marking these artificial cells for tracking, they injected 10 billion cells (equivalent to 2 ml of blood) into the donor's body.
After 5 days, at least 94% of these human hematopoietic cells still circulate in the donor's body. After 26 days, 41% to 63% of the blood cells are still alive, and the survival rate of natural blood is largely the same. These artificial blood cells are as dry as natural cells, effectively delivering oxygen throughout the body.
Duai said that this is a great news for the international medical community. “This experimental result indicates that the day of the bloody end may be imminent.†Although the number of blood donors in developed countries continues to increase, the world still faces serious blood shortages. In areas with high HIV prevalence, the shortage of blood is even more serious.
At present, there are many research teams in the world that are studying "artificial blood." However, other attempts to synthesize blood have focused on creating alternatives to natural blood rather than artificial blood. For example, the team of Chris Cooper of the University of Essex in the United Kingdom is working on the synthesis of a hemoglobin-based blood substitute. This man-made blood is caused by natural diseases, especially in the remote areas of blood transfusion, because it does not need to be refrigerated like fresh blood or stem cell-derived blood, and it is easy to preserve.
The stem cell hematopoietic method has its own advantages. The stem cell hematopoiesis is more similar to the current blood transfusion method, which can alleviate people's concerns because people have always been suspicious of the issue of the safety of artificial blood in the current stage.
Although Duai’s research findings in the medical journal “Blood†are a major advance in the field of stem cell hematopoiesis, there is still a long way to go for large-scale production of “artificial blood†with this method, because this time The amount of blood transfusion in the experiment was only equivalent to 1/200 of the blood volume of an ordinary patient.
