Reference News Network reported on September 5 that foreign media stated that the Chinese public’s fierce debate on genetically modified foods has evolved into a slam-spoken sword among domestic authorities. In China, trapped in the problem of how to feed the 1.3 billion people, genetically modified food has long been a political hot potato.
According to the US Wall Street Journal report on September 3, two weeks ago, General Peng Guangqian, deputy secretary general of the National People's Liberation Army, published an article in the newspaper, which raised a series of questions about China's approval of more trade in GM agricultural products. It implied that Western countries formulated strategies for conspiracy to control China's food security through genetically modified foods. Peng Guangqian wrote that once the world changes, the West cuts off China’s food supply, and 1.3 billion people drink northwestern winds?
According to the report, on September 1st, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (having the right to decide on the policy of GMOs) responded to this issue and announced the response of Lin Min, member of the National Committee on Genetically Modified Organisms. Regarding Peng Guangqian's statement that “through experiments, the high correlation between genetically modified foods and tumors, infertility and other diseases is confirmedâ€, Lin Min categorically denies. Lin Min is also director of the Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
Lin Min also pointed out that the United States is the largest consumer of genetically modified crops in the world, and stated that China does not have so much reserve arable land resources. Therefore, taking advantage of foreign and domestic resources, it is an inevitable choice for China to pool two markets.
He refuted Peng Guangqian's concerns and pointed out that the so-called GM crop is a trap designed by the United States to endanger the Chinese nation. This conspiracy theory is a product of the Cold War mentality. He said that all genetically modified foods that have been listed through safety evaluations are as safe as traditional foods and can be eaten with confidence. If there is interest in researching genetic modification, it is first of all national interest.
The report said that in the process of discussing genetically modified food in China for nearly two decades, government officials and scholars have also put forward similar views with Lin Min. However, Lin Min’s response to Peng Guangqian was very compelling because he was hard-edged and used the words “national interest†and “Cold War thinking†that were more common in defense policy discussions.
The report pointed out that the relevant disputes are at stake with the Ministry of Agriculture. As China becomes more prosperous, food demand is increasing. The Ministry of Agriculture is increasingly seeking imports of GM foods to make up for the lack of domestic supply. In June 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture approved the import of three genetically modified soybeans produced by Monsanto and BASF. In August, the Chinese government granted permission to import the first batch of Argentine genetically modified corn. In addition to commercial production, each phase of China's major crop genetically modified development is approved by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The report said that Peng Guangqian's article reflects China's hesitation in this regard. For GM foods, the public’s resistance has been greater and growing.
According to reports, Chinese Internet platforms, including Sina Weibo, have always resisted the advancement of genetically modified policies. Although the Ministry of Agriculture responded to questions raised by Peng Guangqian one by one, it also showed that the Ministry still had a long way to go to gain confidence in the safety of genetically modified foods.
