Airbus Advances New Fuel Cell Development

With the intensification of the pressure of energy saving and emission reduction in the civil aviation industry, the research and development of aviation alternative energy has also attracted much attention from the industry. A reporter from China Securities Journal recently learned from Airbus that an innovative fuel cell project of Airbus recently received the “2013 Green Technology Award” in aviation, which is one of the most important environmental and commercial awards in Europe.

This is Airbus's research project to use fuel cells as alternative energy sources for civil aviation. According to the person in charge of Airbus, the company's current research on fuel cells converts chemical energy directly into electricity by mixing hydrogen and oxygen. The electrical energy it provides can be used to power some of the aircraft's conventional systems. It can also be used to ignite a main engine and provide complete zero-emission autonomous power when the aircraft is on the ground.

Another advantage of this multi-functional fuel cell system is that it can effectively reduce the total weight of the aircraft, thereby reducing the aircraft's fuel consumption and emissions in flight, and reducing emissions and noise while operating on the ground at the airport.

According to Airbus Chief Operating Officer Bouche, Airbus invests about 2 billion Euros each year in R&D projects related to aircraft performance improvement, including the development of next-generation high-efficiency aircraft such as A320neo and A350XWB, and cooperation in the development of sustainable aviation energy.
