Most body armour are often heavy, but if the research conducted by the City University of New York achieves results, the situation may change. Under the leadership of Prof. Elisa Riedo, scientists have determined that ballistic materials based on two layers of graphene can be harder than diamonds. Graphene is made up of carbon atoms connected in the form of honeycombs and is a quasi-two-dimensional material with only one atomic layer thickness. Graphene is considered to be the strongest material in the world.
This new material, called diamene, consists of two graphene sheets on a silicon carbide substrate. It is described as light and flexible like aluminum foil - in terms of its normal state. When a sudden mechanical pressure is applied at room temperature, it temporarily becomes harder than a block diamond.
The new material was conceived by Angelo Bongiorno, an associate professor at the City University of New York, who developed a computer model that indicated that the material should work as long as the two graphene sheets were properly aligned. Riedo and colleagues tested the actual Diamene sample, which supported the discovery of Bongiorno. Interestingly, the hardening effect only occurs when using two sheets of graphene.
The paper on this research was recently published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
