Microporous hydrophilic polyetheretherketone (PEEK) technology, developed by medical polymer company DiFusion (Austin, TX), was named one of the top ten spine technologies in 2018 by plastic surgeons this week. ZFUZEPEEK composites are recognized because they support the growth of orthopedic implants while retaining the mechanical properties and imaging capabilities of traditional PEEK. ZFUZE is a new type of biomaterial that can be used for injection molding, 3D printing or machining, and is currently being expanded to commercial use in early 2019.

Although porous metal and porous metal coated PEEK implants have been used for a period of time in spinal fusion applications, ZFUZE is characterized by negative charge, microporous, and hydrophilic surfaces. DiFusion founder and CEO Derrick Johns said: "This material can be used for any form of surface treatment, such as laser etching and nano-surface treatment, providing a wide range of clinical and economic advantages for potential strategic partners."
ZFUZE is considered a strong winner of this year's Spinal Technology Award because the company has conducted extensive animal research. The findings will be presented at the North American Spine Association meeting in Los Angeles on September 27, 2018.
DiFusion has developed several internationally patented Metal Ion Therapeutics (MITA) technologies for bone growth, tissue regeneration, antibacterial, cell repair, scaffold construction and increased angiogenesis. ZFUZE is the company's first product.
