To reduce pollution, we must go out of the misunderstanding

Decoration will inevitably produce certain pollution, and the degree of pollution is often proportional to the size of the decoration design, construction, project volume, and furniture. In the current decoration boom, more and more residents have begun to care about the problem of indoor air pollution.

However, when choosing decoration materials, many building materials marked with “green”, “environmental protection” and “zero VOC” on the market are dazzling. Although the 10 new national standards for “restrictions on hazardous materials for interior decoration and decoration materials” have been enforced in July this year, we still find that there are still many misunderstandings in consumer awareness of this issue.

Misunderstanding 1: The implementation of "new standard" production of decorative materials is environmentally friendly products. In fact, the new standard is just a market access standard. When it is formulated, it will both refer to international standards and take into account the current situation in China. It will not only care about the interests of consumers, but also take into account the affordability of domestic manufacturers. Therefore, this standard is not ideal to ensure a healthy standard. In the interior decoration process, two materials, paint and adhesive, are indispensable. They are chemically synthesized materials.

In the current state of the art, formaldehyde, benzene series and other organic volatiles are indispensable parts for ensuring the performance of coatings and adhesives. At the same time, it is a source of pollution that causes indoor air pollution. In order to control and reduce the degree of pollution caused by them and synthesize multiple factors, the State stipulates “limited values” for the content of hazardous substances in materials in the “new standards”, and products that meet the standards are allowed to be sold on the market. Consumers must understand that these products that are allowed to be listed still contain a certain amount of harmful substances, and are not safe and harmless products.

Misunderstanding 2: The use of materials that meet the country's "new standards" will result in indoor air quality. The use of materials that meet the "new standards" for interior decoration cannot be said to be able to meet the standards for air quality in another country, that is, the "acceptance standards for indoor building pollution control in civil construction projects". The content of harmful substances in indoor air is determined by the total amount of harmful substances in all decoration materials (including furniture).

Without controlling the total amount of decoration materials, it is impossible to guarantee air quality standards. Take a water-based paint with a relatively low content of harmful substances as an example: a 20-square-meter room with a coating area of about 70 square meters, and a coating that requires about 20 kilograms of paint three times. If the amount of free formaldehyde in the coating used is close to the limit value of 100 mg/kg specified in the "new standard", then about 2000 mg of free formaldehyde will be released into the air. Although the time for complete release is long, the initial release concentration and speed are very fast.

The indoor air quality meets the standard, requiring a formaldehyde content of 0.08 mg/m3 or less. Through simple calculations, it can be seen that even with water-based coatings that meet the standard, the formaldehyde content in the indoor air will inevitably exceed the standard for a period of time.

Misunderstanding 3: The less VOC, the better. VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) has become a hot spot for business speculation. Low VOC and zero VOC seem to be the highlights and synonym for good paint products. In fact, VOC is only one measure of product environmental protection. Its low content does not mean that the product is of high quality. For coatings currently available to the general public, the lower the VOC, the worse the scrub resistance of the product, and the more serious the tendency of the film to fall off. In actual decoration, the severity of air pollution is related to many factors. To control pollution, we must carefully consider all aspects of design and construction to the selection of building materials and furniture. Under current conditions, consumers should try to avoid over-decoration, and secondly, strengthen ventilation awareness after renovation.
