Develops Low Cost Arsenic Pollution Detection Technology

Drinking water safety in many places has been affected by arsenic contamination. British researchers recently reported that a new type of arsenic contamination detection technology has been developed for this purpose. It is more convenient to use than traditional technologies, and the detection cost is very low.

The University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, issued an announcement a few days ago that researchers at the university have developed this biological detection technology using Bacillus subtilis, which is harmless to people and the environment. The bacteria are sensitive to arsenic and have different physiological responses in water with different concentrations of arsenic.

The researchers genetically modified it based on this characteristic, added some genes that allow the bacteria to produce pigments, and linked the function of pigment genes with its physiological response to arsenic.

The bacteria thus obtained will present different colors in water samples with different concentrations of arsenic. If the arsenic content in the water sample is safe, it will appear green. If the arsenic content in the water sample exceeds the safe limit, the arsenic content will become purple.

The safety standard for arsenic in drinking water, as stipulated by the World Health Organization, is that arsenic in water should not exceed 0.01 mg per liter of water. However, in many places, due to geological reasons, the arsenic content in the water from drilling wells will far exceed this standard. This phenomenon is particularly common in the Himalayas and Southeast Asia. According to reports, there are arsenic contamination in tens of thousands of wells in Nepal.

In the past, there were also technologies to detect arsenic contamination in water. However, expensive and complicated instruments are usually required to obtain the test results. Mercury bromide is used in almost all traditional detection technologies. It is itself a highly toxic substance that may bring additional risk.

In contrast, the new detection technology developed this time is safe and easy to use. It is only necessary to look at the color of the bacteria in the water sample to know the result. And its cost is also very low, it is estimated that the cost of each test as long as about 0.5 US dollars. (Reporter Huang Hao)
