Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, invented a new algorithm that can double the rate at which lithium batteries are charged, not only improving battery efficiency, but also potentially reducing production costs by 25%. This new method no longer understands the characteristics and conditions of the battery by monitoring the current and voltage as in the conventional technology, but uses a mathematical model to estimate the position of lithium ions in the battery to obtain accurate data. With additional analysis, the team can accurately measure battery life and control charge efficiency.
The team has received a $460,000 award from the US Department of Energy. According to the research team leader Scott Moura, the technology is not a purely theoretical study but can be applied to practice. "This is a technology that people can actually use," he said.
